Tuckenhay Mill is an old paper mill within the rolling hills of Devon.
In the early 80’s we installed multiple water to air, water to water and dehumidification heat pumps to serve the pool areas within the recently converted mill buildings that were to be holiday cottages.
The water to air and water to water heat pumps used natural spring water with a constant 8 degree Celsius water temperature during both summer and winter to heat the water and air within the swimming pool.
The air to air heat pump was used to dehumidify the pool area and also supplement the air and water heating during the dehumidification process.
Over the years we have rebuilt the heat pumps to ensure continued operation of the pool environmental conditions.
Recently the Deumidification heat pump has been rebuilt as the space within the pant room could not accommodate the new available replacements on the market.
The design was re engineered and modern controls, refrigerant and newly manufactured heating and cooling coils to increase efficiency and energy use.
The system as now been re-commissioned and fully tested with fantastic results.
We are able to undertake rebuilds of all manufacturers equipment even if the only original part of the equipment is the outer casing and even this can be remanufactured if corrosion has set in.

Macwhirter Western Ltd were tasked with reducing energy consumption in various comfort cooled areas of the Royal Devon and Exeter hospital.
An extensive survey of the entire hospital was carried out and 98 air conditioning units were identified as non-critical and comfort cooling only.
The Solution – Macwhirter Western Ltd working with Centrica proposed and fitted 98 sensors to the air conditioning units that detected movement and light within the room, they also have door and window switches with a delayed time function.
The sensors were set up for each individual room to allow the air conditioning units to automatically switch off if no movement was detected within the space.
If the rooms had any doors or windows we fitted magnetic switches with a delay timer so that if the doors or windows are left open for a predetermined period of time the air conditioning units would switch off.
The month long project was seamless and had no impact on the running of the hospital. The project was completed ahead of time and all parties involved were completely satisfied with the outcome.

To replace faulty shell and tube evaporator to a York water chiller within West Cornwall Hospital, Penzance. To ensure the safe removal of the existing Evaporator we had to support the compressor load due to the Evaporator being a fundamental part of the structure.
With the new Evaporator Bundle now in place we organised for the water connections to be renewed and water tested.

Both chillers are process chillers with massive cost implications during down time of the chillers of up to one hundred thousand pounds per hour. We were asked by our client to change the pressure relief valves fitted to each condenser due to the certification of the valves was due to end of. Due to the location and style of the valves within the refrigerant circuit, total recovery of the refrigerant was required to enable the removal of the old and fitment of the new PRV’s, this was two days work for an engineer per chiller. To future proof the chillers we offered the fitting of duplex valves with dual pressure relief valves. This will allow the valves to be changed without the need to recover the refrigerant and if necessary the valves can be changed while the chiller is still in operation.
This option has reduced the man hours to change the valves per chiller from two days to 1 hour with the chiller still in service.
This massive cost saving from an hours, materials and down time will be passed on to our customer and repeated every 5 years.

Heat Pump Upgrade
Project to upgrade existing heat pump and electric heaters for swimming pool, spa and air heating on 50m³ indoor leisure pool.
We first removed all of the existing equipment and supplied and fitted a new Mitsubishi ECOdan heat pump and ancillary equipment.
The Mitsubishi heat pump operates on a primary circuit to a 300 litre buffer tank and a secondary circuit from the buffer tank is connected to three heat exchangers managing all the heating needs of the facility.
Separate temperature controls are fitted to the heat exchangers to allow individual control of each, with the pool set to 29°c, spa set to 38°c and air heating at 32°c.The upgrade has given the client a single heat pump rather than running two fixed speed and now inefficient heat pumps  and separate electric heaters.
We repurposed the electric heaters within the new arrangement to provide emergency  back-up if ever required.
At present after several months of running we are achieving a SCOP of 4.1, and with some more fine tuning on the weather compensation curve we are confident of getting an even greater energy efficiency.

Following a requirement for cooling and ventilation from Josh and the team at future bodies to provide more comfortable temperature conditions we were happy to supply and fit the new solutions within the gym and spinning room. As seen in the pictures below some high level access equipment was required to complete the challenging pipe run. Our engineers are all fully trained and hold their IPAF licence so this posed no problems. As always great care and attention was put not only into the installation but by taking care of the customers facility to ensure minimum disruption upon re-opening.‍

As domestic heat pumps become more and more popular we are pleased to be able to offer fantastic installations as seen below.
Our installation was planned with our customer at a convenient time to minimise disruption. Our engineers were prepared for a domestic installation with carpet and hard floor protection to avoid any unnecessary soiling or marks to the property. A review of tools and equipment was completed to ensure a smooth and seamless installation. We completed the full installation of the desired system providing both heating and cooling with minimal disruption to our client and with no interruptions to the the neighbouring properties. The installation was completed to the customers satisfaction.

MacWhirter Western Ltd were tasked with providing comfort cooling to two Kiddicaru day care nurseries. Our history in working in a similar environment meant we were instantly able to call upon our knowledge of potential issues prior to any works beginning. We liaised closely with staff firstly to discuss a working programme around the clients needs, in a very sensitive environment.
MacWhirter Western Ltd in house design team engineered the solution using multiple Daikin split systems with a range of fan coil units to suit the individual spaces. The success of these two projects has led on to maintenance contracts on various other sites across the South West.
